What are symptoms of Cataract?
- Cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens within your eye, which results in distorted vision.
- Fuzzy vision
- Less quality of color vision
Cataract is primarily observed in elders however it is also occur in younger or cause by trauma, some systematic diseases, and long-term use of some sort of medicine.
Senile cataract usually growing asymmetric but it starts on both eyes.
It is important for people who are over 40 years old to go for examination every 6 mounts. Cataract can be found out early so treatment can be decided.
Congenital Cataract
Cataract can be seen on babies.
Congenital cataract may occur because the mother had rubella during pregnancy. Doctors check the babies to see if babies has cataract after the birth. Babies should see doctor every year.

When Cataract operation should be made?
Patients can have operation when is not enough vision for themselves and cataract diagnosis has been made.
It is not good for wait cataract to growth and get hard because operating hard cataract is more complicated and healing period is longer.
What should be aware of the day of the Surgery?
Patients can eat light meal before the operation but toddlers or some people with personal reason can have operation under anesthesia if so they are not be able to eat or drink 6 hours before the operation.
Patients should continue medicine that who has systemic disease such as diabetes, hypertension or asthma. It is better to brought medicine with them for systemic disease.
Patients should not put make up on their faces in day of the surgery.
Patients can go back to their home short time after the surgery. Doctor will ask you to come back for the check within 36 hours.
It is better not to go back home by themselves or drive.
Duration of the operation.
A cataract operation takes 10 to 15 minutes depending of doctor’s experience and hardness of the cataract.
Recovery period.
Recovery time changes with hardness of cataract and difficulty of the operation.
Patient’s vision gets better within 10 to 15 days.
Patients eye recovery perfectly in 30 days.
Is there any risk after the surgery?
It is always a risk after the surgery like any other surgeries. Infection is the most common complication after the surgery.
Antibiotic drop come across with the operation for use after surgery.
Patients have to be careful first 72 hours and it is very important to keep the eye hygienic. Also patient has to follow instruction very well of drop using after surgery.
Patients should go to doctor if there any complication after the surgery such as decrease of vision, sour pain in the eye as soon as possible.
Multifocal Intraocular Lens operation
After the cataract operation with standard inocular lens patients may need to wear glasses for far / rear side. Even if patients do not use glasses their vision in not good as healthy eye. Patients do not need to wear glasses if they use multifocal inocular lens operation.
- Patients do not rub and pressure on operated eye.
- Try not to sleep on operated eye first day of surgery.
- Patients may clean their face with wet towel but try to not contact water to their faces.
- Patients can take shower 1 week later after the operation.
- Swimming is not allowed first 2 weeks. Patients have to get permission before they are performing swimming, diving or another water sport from their doctor.
- It is normal to have sensitivity for sun, dilution or sting in eye after couple days of surgery.
- Patients have to wear glasses if they want to go out.
- Patients can do daily routines such as reading, watching TV and walking.
- Patients can use old glasses but patient may not see very well because eye numbers has changed after surgery.
- New glasses will be prescribed 6 to 8 weeks after surgery.
- Patients have to try not to lift or carry heavy stuff. They can continue their prayer.
- Patients may not drive car before get permission from their doctor.
- Patients have to use medicines doctor prescribes to them and do not miss the controls.
