Intraocular Lenses
Intraocular Lenses

In cataract disease, the natural lens in the patient's eye loses its transparency after a while and the patient's quality of vision decreases, causing reflections in car headlights at night and a decrease in the quality of color vision. In this case, the dysfunctional lens needs to be replaced with artificial lenses. These lenses (intraocular lenses) can be applied to cataract patients or patients with high spectacle numbers whose eyes are not suitable for laser treatment.

Usage Areas of Intraocular Lenses

Intraocular lenses may be recommended after a detailed eye examination in patients who do not want to wear glasses but are not suitable for laser treatment, popularly known as eye correction. But the most important and frequently used area is cataract treatment. The operation is completed by removing the lens that has lost its transparency and inserting the most suitable intraocular lens for the patient, so that the eye regains its vision quality.

Intraocular Lens Types

Lenses that allow us to see only at a distance are called monofocal (single focus),
The lenses that allow us to see far and near are called bifocal,
The lenses that allow us to see far, middle and near distances are called trifocal lenses. Bifocal or trifocal lenses are preferred according to the patient's living conditions and the condition of the eye, so that the patient does not need glasses.
If the patient has astigmatism in the eye, toric lens (lens with astigmatism) can be preferred.

Intraocular Lens Selection

The main goal of intraocular lenses used in cataract treatment is to return the patients to their healthy days, but it is very important that the patient is comfortable in terms of vision for the rest of their life because this is an unrepeatable operation. Therefore, the patient's age, occupation, living conditions, habits and hobbies should be taken into consideration.

For example, lenses with UV (Ultraviolet) properties are recommended for someone who works outdoors with a lot of exposure to sunlight, or lenses that improve the quality of night vision should be preferred for a patient who travels at night for work. Therefore, in addition to a detailed physical examination, the choice of intraocular lens is a situation where the patient and the doctor decide together according to the patient's living conditions. Therefore, the decision process is even more prioritized and important than surgery.

Innovations in Intraocular Lenses

In the past, in the treatment of cataract disease, the deformed lens was removed and replaced with monofocal lenses that allowed the patient to see clearly near or far. For this reason, patients continued to wear glasses after surgery because only one of the visual defect was eliminated. Now, multifocal, that is, multifocal intraocular lenses have replaced monofocal lenses and thus all visual defects are eliminated at once, clear vision is provided and there is no need for glasses.
Patients wearing multifocal lenses (smart lenses) can read a book or see far away without glasses. Trifocal lenses are the most advanced intraocular lens technology in today's medical community. It improves the patient's quality of life as it provides the closest to natural clear vision for near, middle and far distances.
