When facial shine, an oily feeling or more prominent pores are in question, one of the most frequently asked questions is “What is sebum?”. Sebum is a natural, oily, lipid‑rich secretion produced by the sebaceous glands. These glands, which usually work in connection with the hair follicle, transport the secretion they produce to the skin surface. The purpose of this secretion is not merely to create shine; by forming a thin protective layer on the skin, it helps reduce water loss and supports the skin in remaining more supple. Therefore, it is not correct to regard sebum only as “excess oil”; both too little and too much can affect the balance of the skin.
The source of sebum is the sebaceous glands. These glands are located within the skin and in most areas work together with hair follicles. The produced secretion travels along the follicular canal to reach the skin surface. In other words, sebum is not a substance that comes onto the skin from the outside, but a natural secretion produced by the skin’s own structures.
Sebaceous glands are more concentrated in areas such as the face, scalp, upper chest and back. For this reason, shine, oily sensation and more visible pores are more often noticed in these regions. In some areas such as the palms and soles, sebaceous glands are absent; this shows that the distribution of sebum is not uniform throughout the body.
Sebum production does not proceed at a constant rate. Age, hormonal changes and skin type influence this production. Under the effect of hormones known especially as androgens, sebaceous glands may work more actively. This is one of the main reasons why an increase in sebum is more apparent during puberty.
The primary function of sebum is to form a thin oily layer on the skin surface. This layer helps reduce transepidermal water loss. Better preservation of moisture in the skin contributes to a reduction in the feeling of dryness and surface tightness. Especially in areas that are in constant contact with the external environment, this natural covering is part of the skin’s defense system.
This secretion also contributes to the skin feeling softer and more elastic. The skin barrier is maintained in balance not only by water but also by its lipid content. When sebum is present at an adequate level, the skin surface moves more comfortably, flakiness is less noticeable and the skin becomes more resistant to friction.
Sebum produced on the scalp has a similar function. It helps prevent hair shafts from becoming completely dry and dull, and protects the surface of the scalp. In short, sebum is not a harmful waste product that the body is trying to eliminate; when present in the right amount, it is a natural part of skin physiology.
Sebum and sweat are often confused, but they are not the same secretion. Sebum comes from the sebaceous glands and is lipid‑rich in structure. Sweat, on the other hand, is produced by the sweat glands and consists mostly of water and some dissolved substances. The function of one is to protect the skin surface with an oily layer, while the main function of the other is to help regulate body temperature.
This difference can also be perceived in daily life. The wetness that forms on the skin after exercise is largely related to sweating. The shine that develops during the day, especially on the forehead, nose and scalp, is more associated with sebum. Sometimes these two situations can be seen at the same time; for example, in hot weather both sweating increases and the skin may appear more shiny. Nevertheless, their sources and functions are distinct.
Knowing this distinction is valuable for correctly interpreting changes in the skin. An oily appearance does not always mean sweating; likewise, feeling sweaty does not indicate sebum excess.
Sebum production is influenced by hormones, especially androgens. Since the effect of these hormones becomes more pronounced during puberty, sebaceous glands may work more actively. Therefore, oiliness is more frequently noticed in younger individuals on the forehead, nose, chin and back.
Some people naturally have oilier skin. This is related to the size and activity pattern of the sebaceous glands. Even in two people with the same skin care habits, the amount of sebum may differ.
Warm environments, intense physical activity and frequent contact of the skin surface throughout the day may increase the oily appearance. This increase may sometimes result from a true excess of sebum and sometimes from the existing secretion becoming more apparent on the skin.
Practices that excessively dry out or irritate the skin surface can disrupt its balance. When the skin barrier is strained, the surface sensation may become more oily, and a person may try to suppress this with repeated new interventions. Oily skin is often associated with high sebum production, but the two are not exactly the same. A shiny appearance of the skin may also result from the structure of the products used, sweating during the day or residues accumulating on the skin surface.

This blockage may contribute to the development of comedones and acne; however, sebum alone is not the only cause of acne.
Having an oily skin type does not by itself mean disease. The main problem is the emergence of accompanying blockage, inflammatory lesions, sensitivity or persistent complaints that make daily life difficult.
When sebum is low, the skin may feel drier, tighter and duller. A fine, flaky appearance on the surface, a feeling of tightness after washing and a tendency to become irritated more easily may be observed. This picture may suggest that the skin’s protective lipid layer has weakened.
When sebum is excessive, shine, more prominent pores and an intense oily sensation, especially in the T‑zone, become evident. Rapid oiliness of the scalp may accompany this. If blackheads, closed comedones, inflammatory pimples or painful deep lesions are added to this picture, the issue is no longer merely a cosmetic concern.
The way to understand skin balance is not to look at a single sign. Evaluating surface appearance, duration of perceived dryness or oiliness, and accompanying lesions together provides a more accurate framework.
Sebum is a natural part of the skin; the goal is not to eliminate it completely but to maintain the skin’s balance. If oiliness becomes pronounced, pore blockages become frequent or acne starts to affect daily life, a dermatology assessment is appropriate. Especially in cases of suddenly onset and rapidly worsening acne, painful nodule‑ or cyst‑like lesions, discharge, marked redness and a tendency to scarring, a dermatologist should be consulted without delay.
