Glaucoma Treatment
Glaucoma Treatment

Glaucoma is an insidious disease that can result in loss of vision if not diagnosed and treated early. For this reason, eye pressure should be checked every year as a regular eye examination.
Glaucoma is a term used for a range of conditions in which visual nerve damage occurs. The main reason of glaucoma is the high pressure in the eye. In cases where the vision nerve is impaired, tissue weakness or structural defects are seen, the visual nerve may become more sensitive to pressure and damage may occur without pressure increase (Normal Tension Glaucoma).

How glaucoma is treated ? What is Glaucoma ?

Glaucoma treatment is of high importance for eye health. Glaucoma (also colloquially known as eye tension) is a disease that usually occurs over the age of 40, usually progressing over the years, damaging the eye nerve necessary for vision. When vision loss occurs in glaucoma, there is no chance for return. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment is very important. A careful eye examination is essential for early diagnosis. In our centre, glaucoma is diagnosed and treated with through the systems equipped with the latest technology in the world.

Symptoms of Glaucoma;
  • Headaches evident in the morning
  • Blurred vision from time to time
  • Seeing light rings around the lights at night
  • Pain around the eye while watching television

What are the factors that increase the risk of glaucoma?

  • History of glaucoma in family (genetic predisposition)
  • Being over 35 years old
  • Diabetes
  • Severe anemia or shocks
  • High-low systemic blood pressure (body tension)
  • High Myopia
  • High Hyperopia
  • Migraine
  • Long-term cortisone treatment
  • Eye injuries
  • Racial factors
Since people with these features have a higher risk of developing glaucoma, it is advisable for them to undergo regular eye examinations for early detection of damage to the visual nerve.

How is Glaucoma Diagnosed?

High-tech examination devices are used to determine if eye pressure is observed and there is damage to the vision nerve. Our glaucoma physicians who review the data of these devices plan the patient's treatment process. These are COMPUTERIZED VISION AREAS showing the amount of visual loss due to damage to the visual nerve, OCT (optic nerve tomography) that conducts visual nerve and nerve fiber analysis, and PACHYMETER devices that measure the corneal thickness which can determine how close your measured value is to reality. They are of great importance in the diagnosis of glaucoma.

Follow-up of glaucoma

Since glaucoma is a progressive disease, the follow-up is very important. The computerized visual field and OCT tests, which are performed in succession, will occur after a period of progress. Your doctor will discuss your illness with you using this rate of progress and plan your treatment for you. If the rate of progression is not determined, Glaucoma treatment may remain unfortunately uncompleted.
In the treatment of glaucoma it can be done in three ways.

  • Pharmacotherapy
  • Laser treatment
  • Surgical Therapy

Pharmacotherapy: There are many corpuscle used in the treatment of glaucoma. These corpuscles reduce the intraocular pressure with different mechanisms of action. They are used regularly and for life. If the initial treatment fails, the second corpuscle is added. If the eye pressure still does not decrease, a third corpuscle is added or other treatment methods are applied according to the opinion of the treating doctor.
Laser Treatment: In glaucoma treatment, laser treatment may apply to patients who have not get adequately responded to the pharmacotherapy.

Surgical Treatment: A small canal opens in the white part of the eye. This channel, which is too small to be seen from the outside, facilitates the discharge of the high pressure liquid inside the eye.
With the help of developing technology and new methods, it is possible to perform surgery that can remove the fluid in the eye with the help of a tube with lowering of the eye pressure, for progressive conditions, or surgeries with lower eye pressure.
